The Department of Photography and Media Art offers two specializations: photography and media art (BA and MA) and animation (BA). It aims at raising professional artists with broad expertise in humanities and arts, knowledgeable in and having a good command of contemporary photography and media technologies, and able to create original and professional art works. The Department was established in 1996 by prof. Alvydas Lukys and his colleagues (staff). In 2009 the Department has moved to the newly renovated building (former Pravda Printing House).

Undergraduate Studies (BA)
The first two years of Bachelor studies are devoted to basic means and techniques of photography and media art. Third year students have to decide upon their specialisation – photography, video or media art. Third and fourth year students are offered profound courses in the chosen field.
The concept of the study programme rests on the problem of image making, which is related to specific theoretical and technical means. The issue of image making is approached from three different angles: static image, dynamic image and virtual image. Studies of the static image relate to photography and examine the characteristics of a three-dimentional setting and its flat optical projection. The main issues here are specific capturing conditions, different aesthetic ways of expression and various levels of communication. Studies of the dynamic image relate to video and film. Students engage in setting images in time, learn sound processing and articulate the language of image building. Studies of virtual image combine the issues of static and dynamic image and expand on new technical possibilities of a digital image. Much attention is paid to technical tricks, software studies, new means of communication.
The aim of numerous workshops is to provide students with a possibility to try out as many different forms of artistic work as possible – they can do newspaper, magazine or book illustration, photo album, exhibition, installation, video film, etc.
General subjects of the syllabus include theory and semiotics of visual communication. Traditional and contemporary art studies enable students to adequatly interpret classical art objects and to understand the language of contemporary art.
